Network Rail have enlisted the help of British and World 400m hurdles champion Dai Greene to highlight the dangers of taking a short cut across rail tracks.

In the last year alone, nearly 50 people have been killed after trying to take shortcuts and trespassing across the railway tracks.

Dai has been given a realistic but unusual running test – across the tracks – but it’s not as easy as it seems, even for a top athlete at the peak of his condition. It’s dark, there’s grease on the line, unexpected trip hazards and it’s raining. It illustrates that if a fit, agile athlete used to leaping high hurdles at speed, is unable to get out of the way of a train travelling at 80mph, then you won’t either.

Click here to see the campaign video.

Fact file

Sections of tracks move to redirect trains, but feet can get caught in the mechanism without the signaller seeing anyone, as there is not a camera on every piece of track

The time it takes a person to perceive a threat and react to it is known as the perception-reaction time – in accident reconstructions, it is usually found to be at least 1.5 seconds and increases with increasing danger

The danger isn’t just on the track, it’s also dangerous next to the tracks – trains tilt, and changes in air pressure can pull people under trains; for any train over 40 mph, the danger envelope is at least 2-3 metres on either side of the track, that’s at least a 5-7m total danger zone when you include the track

At 125mph a 450 tonne train takes 2km, or 20 football pitches to stop so by the time the human eye sees a person on the tracks it’s much too late to stop the train

Calling all 14-18 year old young people of faith who go to non-faith schools – The Sex Education Forum at the National Children’s Bureau would like to know what you think of Sex and Relationships Education (SRE).

If you have a faith (eg are Muslim, or Christian, or another religion) but don’t attend a faith school then the National Children’s Bureau would like to know what you think about the Sex and Relationships Education you receive or have received in school. They want to know how it can be improved to reflect the needs of young people of faith. This is a national survey you would be taking part in!

The survey should only be answered by young people in Year 10 to Upper 6th Form (14-18 years of age) and can be found at surveymonkey.com/s/9R3HQTY
It is anonymous and any comments added in the survey may be used to inform a publication about delivering SRE to young people of faith.

It would be great if you would take part – please do have a look

Please visit ncb.org.uk/sef for more information.
