D of E Expidition to Wales

D of E Snowdonia Expedition

4 girls and 5 boys aged 16 to 22 set off from sunny Sutton during the October half term for the long drive to Snowdownia National Park for a week's training in the hills of North Wales.

You may remember this week...we had snow in Sutton...it was colder on the hills of North Wales!

Despite the conditions we set off from the bunkhouse for a variety of walking, navigation exercises, 'what if' scenarios, first aid training, and camp craft.
The backdrop was spectacular with snow on the hills with occasional high winds and snow showers.

The plan had included a possible wild camp on the hills, but sense prevailed and we used the accommodation we had although some lunch and evening meals were cooked outside.

Undoubtedly the conditions were more extreme than we had hoped for, but with additional thermal layers we were able to still enjoy the stunning scenery, and all came back to tell the tale.

One young person wrote, he now understands why staff need to be so well qualified, as the theory learned during meetings at the Youth Centre give you the know how but not the experience
.
In all it was a great learning experience and provided training for their Gold expeditions next year".
